Upper Mustang Tour by jeep / 4WD
The lost Tibetan kingdom of Mustang has a road access from Pokhara these days. However large part of Upper Mustang is still intact and unexplored. Foreign tourists entering the region is highly regulated with special restricted area permit. While new sky caves with mural arts, scriptures and other artifacts are being discovered, hundreds still remains inaccessible. Remote villages still use caves as their residence and nomad populations lives in tents in the high grazing. Monasteries older than in Tibet exhibits beautiful murals and ancient architecture. Large part of the Mustang empire are still build of rammed earthen bricks. Honeycomb mud houses, chortens and Kani painted in straps of grey, red and white creates great harmony with its colorful surroundings.

This trip in Upper Mustang was wonderful, Rabin is very friendly and attentive. We loved the places we stayed, especially in Lo Mantang. Accommodation was nice everywhere, Rabin and the driver guided us to the main attractions in Mustang. We had a great time in this special place, people are so kind and the tibetan culture is amazing.... We highly recommend this tour ...and the team (Rabindra and the driver) !

Restricted area of Upper Mustang and special permit
The trans-Himalayan region of Upper Mustang was forbidden for foreign travelers until 1992. The region is still in restricted area and requires special Restricted area permit (RAP). RAP could be issues only by a registered company with licensed and insured guide.
Best time to travel
September to November and March till May are the best months for Upper Mustang Tour. February, December and August are the shoulder seasons. Since it didn't snow in winter, weather was good for the tour during the winter months. This could also be a relatively better destination to travel during the summer monsoon as it is in the rain shadow of the Himalayas.
Tour difficulty
The tour is easy in category. Half of the 222 km stretch of the highway is black topped and rest are graveled. However, it is likely to be damages each year by landslide and flooding. Expect certain section of bumpy and adventurous ride. This tour also involves short walking, village tours and hiking for exclusive experiences.
Altitude sickness
Altitude sickness is not a serious problem in this tour as the highest elevation guests will be sleeping is at 3,800 m. Our itinerary is customized to stay at lower altitude and climb gradually to the highest elevation. However stay aware about the development of symptoms and take some preventive medicine if needed.
Respect local customs
Mustang is very spiritual place lived by happy people with high moral and kindness.
- Greet all passerby with national greetings 'Namaste' or Tibetan greeting 'Tashi Delek'.
- Always go clockwise around the Mani walls, chortens or a monastery.
- Don't sit on a table.
- You may have to take off your shoes to go inside their private home kitchen and alter.
- Take off hats and shoes before going inside monastery.
- Don't take pictures or record prayers inside the monastery without permission.
- Ask about the entrance tickets before entering a monastery, cave and museum. Most of them have separate small fees.
